By the end of this case based module, Veterinary Technicians and Veterinarians will learn how to devise anesthesia protocols based on patient risk and manage their patients pre/intraoperatively. They will have practiced and be able to obtain appropriate pre-operative patient information to determine the level of risk, and be able to determine for their surgical patients best anesthesia drug choice, dosage & route, equipment, intraop management, and post-op anesthesia care.

Attendees should gain a better understanding of acute or surgical pain mechanisms, recognition, differentials for common intraoperative clinical sign and vital parameter changes, and treatments. This presentation will be targeted to Veterinarians and Veterinary Technicians who want to expand their understanding of commonly used preanesthetic medications both new and old. They will consider why premedication is beneficial to most anesthetic plans. A review of the pharmacology of different drug classes, including mechanism of action, anticipated side-effects, as well asl indications and contraindications for use will be discussed.

This lecture will discuss anesthetic recovery and the events that occur after the gas has been turned off. Technicians will be presented with information on monitoring throughout the recovery period, how to handle a 'rough' recovery, and how to manage a prolonged recovery.
